Nine Times the Accusation Came First

In November 2011, Donald Trump began telling anyone who would listen that Barack Obama was going to attack Iran in order to win an election. He said it in a video. He said it on Twitter. He kept saying it into 2013, at least seven times by Snopes' count, with the motive varying between getting elected, boosting poll numbers, saving face, and looking tough.^[1][2]

Obama served eight years and never attacked Iran. He signed a nuclear agreement with it instead.

On January 3, 2020, Trump ordered the strike that killed Qassem Soleimani. It was an election year. He was under impeachment.^[4]

What follows is nine of these, each with both halves dated. Read the ledger and draw your own conclusion. This piece deliberately does not draw it for you, and section 09 explains why that restraint is the point rather than a hedge.

01Iran

A month before the tweets, on his own YouTube channel, he had put it at greater length: the president "will start a war with Iran because he has absolutely no ability to negotiate… the only way he figures that he's going to get reelected — and as sure as you're sitting there — is to start a war with Iran."^[3]

Obama's actual Iran policy was the JCPOA, signed in 2015. Whatever you think of that agreement, it is the opposite of the prediction.

02The wiretap

This is the sharpest one in the set, because the accusation was investigated and found to be false, and the mirror-image conduct was investigated and found to be real.

The surveillance he described did not happen; the surveillance he conducted did, against the committee investigating him, against journalists covering him, and against relatives of both who had done nothing at all.

03Executive orders

The phrase he used was "major power grabs of authority": not inefficiency, not overreach on a particular subject, but a structural objection to governing by order at all.

04Two he can be measured on

These two are smaller, and worth including precisely because they are unarguable. Both halves are counts.

In fairness on the debt: Congress controls spending, and fiscal 2020–21 includes pandemic relief that passed with broad bipartisan support. The point is not that he personally caused the increase. It is that he made the debt a signature attack line and then presided over the largest run-up on record.

05Foreign money

Two things this does not establish. The report was produced by House Oversight Democrats (the minority) working from records obtained through Trump's accountants; the underlying documents are real, the framing is one party's. And "this violated the emoluments clause" is a legal argument that was never adjudicated. Separately, Hunter Biden's foreign dealings did happen; what Republicans could not establish, despite years of investigation, was a case against Joe Biden.

06The tape

Every other entry here asks you to trust a fact-checker's transcription. This one does not. The audio is public.

11,780 was exactly one more than his margin of defeat: not an estimate of fraud, not a range, but the precise number required to change the outcome, requested directly from the official who would have to produce it.

Raffensperger, on the same call, repeatedly: "We don't agree that you have won." He told Trump there was no error in the count. Trump pressed anyway, for roughly an hour.

That is the entire argument of this section: the record speaks for itself.

07Where the pattern gets harder

Two more pairs exist that are cited constantly and are weaker than people think. Including them honestly means marking exactly where the evidence stops.

"Lock her up." He said it at rallies throughout 2016, at least seven times, and PolitiFact rated his later denial that he ever said it False.^[20] The substance was Clinton's handling of classified material. The FBI investigated her and brought no charges; Comey called it careless but found no evidence of intent.

Trump was later indicted on 40 felony counts over classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, including obstruction of the government's effort to get them back.^[21] But that case never went to trial. Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed it in July 2024 on the grounds that the special counsel's appointment was improper, a procedural ruling rather than a finding about the conduct. The appeal was dropped after the election.^[22] The Georgia election case was dismissed in its entirety in November 2025.^[23]

So the honest version is narrow: he demanded imprisonment for someone who was investigated and never charged, and was himself charged and never tried. "He did what he accused her of" is not established, and this piece does not claim it.

"The DOJ has been weaponized." He and his allies made this the central indictment of the previous administration. Since returning to office, his Justice Department has investigated or indicted former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, former CIA Director John Brennan, former National Security Adviser John Bolton, and Senators Mark Kelly and Adam Schiff.^[24][25]

Adam Schiff appears twice in this article. His phone records were secretly seized in 2017. He is under investigation again now.

These are indictments and investigations, not convictions. Everyone named is entitled to the presumption of innocence. And note the symmetry rather than scoring it: the first Comey case was dismissed in November 2025 because the prosecutor had been improperly appointed, procedurally the same defect that ended Trump's own documents case. Whether these prosecutions are meritorious is unresolved, and this piece does not resolve it.

08What this is not

There is a word people reach for here, and this piece has deliberately not used it.

Calling this projection is a claim about what is happening inside someone's head: that the accusation reveals a hidden awareness of his own conduct. Nobody can document that. Not a journalist, not a psychiatrist who has never examined him, and certainly not a reader. The moment a piece asserts it, it has traded something checkable for something that cannot be checked, and handed anyone who wants to dismiss the whole thing a reason to.

What is documented is narrower and, honestly, harder to argue with: a repeated sequence in which a specific accusation is made on a specific date, and conduct matching that accusation is later carried out on a specific date, by the person who made it.

You may conclude that this is coincidence, that any politician with a forty-year public record would yield a similar list, or that predicting an opponent will do something disreputable is simply what campaigning sounds like. Those are reasonable readings and the evidence here does not exclude them.

What the evidence does exclude is not knowing, since the dates are simply the dates.

09The ledger

10What's confirmed and what isn't

A note on the quotes. The tweets in this piece are cited to fact-checkers who verified them, not to the original posts. X no longer serves old tweets publicly, the Trump Twitter Archive returns nothing to an automated request, and the Internet Archive's captures of individual tweet URLs redirect. We tried all three. Snopes ran three separate checks on the Iran posts, one establishing a timestamp to the minute. That is arguably a better citation for a reader than a raw link (it has been examined by someone whose job is examining it), but this piece does not hold the original artifacts and does not pretend to.

Not claimed anywhere in this piece: that any of these actions were motivated by the accusations that preceded them; that the sequence proves self-awareness; that a psychological process is at work. Only that the accusations are dated, the actions are dated, and the order is what it is.

What would change this piece: a documented instance where one of these accusations was made after the corresponding conduct would break that entry's ordering entirely. A comparable ledger assembled for another president with a forty-year public record would tell us whether this pattern is distinctive or merely what happens when anyone talks in public for four decades, and we would publish that finding whichever way it came out.
